THE POWER TO FEED

As you know, the month of March symbolizes the beginning of nutrition month, being nutritionists, this is our favorite month! To begin, we will discover together the power of food. The Nutrition Month campaign will feature 5 topics that we will discuss. The very first theme includes the power to eat!

Eating as a champion is a winner!
Each nutritionist can tell you a lot about the many benefits attributed to the action of feeding cleverly every day. In fact, the foods we eat have an effect not only on the structure of our brain, but also the bacterial composition of our intestinal flora! In addition, some foods with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals help to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, a process that can damage and weaken our cells.

By the way, did you know that our mood is not only affected by our brains and hormones, but also by our gut? Serotonin, responsible for regulating sleep and appetite, is produced mainly in the intestine. Serotonin production is greatly affected by the amount of "good" bacteria in the intestinal barrier. The presence of these friendly bacteria is particularly related to the food we eat.

What to eat to maximize health benefits?
In order to reduce oxidative stress and the damage it can produce, fruits and vegetables are our allies! Choosing different colors ensures that you have access to a wide variety of nutrients including antioxidants.

As for intestinal health, we want to add as much fiber-rich food as possible, while limiting our consumption of red meat. Think whole grain cereals, fruits and vegetables with the peel (as much as possible), chickpeas, lentils, beans and nuts.

Ideas for energy snacks
For a satiating and nourishing snack, choose foods rich in fiber and protein.

Here is our list of favorite snacks:
Mix of roasted chickpeas and popcorn
Vegetables with hummus or guacamole dip
Fruit and cottage cheese or Greek yogurt
Pita cut into spikes and roasted in the oven to make it crisp, topped with tofu spread
Cereal bars with a glass of milk or soy beverage
Whole grain crackers with cheese cubes

With a healthy and balanced diet, you put the odds on your side to feel energized, in addition to taking care of your physical and psychological health.

If you think that your diet needs a little help, the nutritionists of the Johanne Vézina Preventive Nutrition Team are here for you! It will be our pleasure to demystify with you the foods and their treasures, because the power of food is our passion!
